19 Day Australia & New Zealand Cruise: Sydney to Sydney

Duration
19 Days
Prices:
On request

Embark on an Australian cruise to visit two major Australian cities and the highlights of New Zealand’s east coast. Begin in the cosmopolitan cities of Sydney and Melbourne before heading across the ocean to cruise Milford Sound, tour the wine regions of Marlborough and Napier, and explore the diverse capitals of Wellington and Auckland.

This 19-day cruise takes you from Sydney and Melbourne across the ocean to the islands of New Zealand.

Your Australia vacation begins in Sydney, Australia’s largest city. Sydney is famous the world over for its incredible natural harbour, so that should be your first stop when exploring the city. Visit the iconic Harbour Bridge and tour the unforgettable Sydney Opera House. Then head to the Rocks neighbourhood to learn about the country’s history as a penal colony before hitting up the promenade to do some shopping. Close out your time in Sydney by working on your tan on Bondi Beach, making sure you look your best before taking to the sea.

From Sydney, embark on the Norwegian Jewel to journey west to Melbourne. With over 16 dining options, 15 bars and restaurants, a casino, pool, spa, and theatrical shows, the Norwegian Jewel, has plenty of fun to keep you occupied during your time between cities. First port of call is Melbourne, the cultural capital of Australia that is consistently rated the most livable city in the world. After spending a day there, you’ll understand why it attracts so many people. Visit Federation Square to experience the epicentre of its cultural scene, taking in the trendy laneway and rooftop bars and restaurants that have taken the city by storm. If you want to experience the diversity of its neighbourhoods, head to St. Kilda’s to see the famous amusement park, Luna Park, before bonding with locals at Fitzroy.

From Melbourne, cross the ocean to New Zealand and the picturesque area around Milford Sound on the South Island. Milford Sound is one of the top travel destinations in the world and its central highlight, Mitre Peak (Rahotu), is the most photographed mountain in the country. Take a cruise across this fjord and two nearby fjords, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound, to appreciate why so many people from around the world pilgrimage to see it.

Dip onto the east side of the island to Dunedin to see yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and royal albatrosses. Then explore the city centre full of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and see New Zealand’s only castle. Head further north to Akaroa to a town with a balmy climate that’s known for boutiques and local cheese. On the northern tip of the island, visit Picton, which thrives off its accessibility to the Marlborough Sounds. Take a cruise down the sounds to see what makes these sea-drowned valleys so distinctive. It’s also close to the popular Marlborough wine region, which is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc.

Pass onto the North Island to visit Wellington, the capital of New Zealand and its second largest city. Take a ride on the red Cable Car up to the Botanical Gardens to achieve an incredible view over Cook Strait. Then stroll through the lanes, admiring the Victorian timber homes on the hillside, perhaps stopping off at a gallery or crafts store to appreciate the city’s growing cultural scene. You might also want to take in a museum while you’re there; the city has the National Archives, National Art Gallery, National Library, and Museum of New Zealand all within its borders.

Up the east coast, you’ll find Napier, a city that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in the art deco style. Tour the Marine Parade and enjoy the local wines before heading further north to Rotorua, a geothermal marvel where you’ll find mud pools, hot springs, and the Pohutu Geyser. It’s also New Zealand’s centre of all things Maori, so visit Whakarewarewa Village to learn about the island’s indigenous culture.

End your trip to Australia and New Zealand by exploring the Bay of Islands, a region of 140 subtropical islands that afford incredible fishing opportunities and pristine beaches to swim off of. Close out your cruise in Auckland, a picturesque city framed by two natural harbours. Climb the Sky Tower to admire the harbours and visit Auckland Domain to explore a park built around an extinct volcano. Then cross the ocean back to Sydney to finish your Australia vacation.
