A Taste of Bordeaux

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,748

Sample earthy truffles, sip on exquisite wines, and savour the finer things in life on this journey through southwestern France. As you head throughout the region, you’ll enjoy Bordeaux’s gastronomic pleasures, travel across breathtaking landscapes of rivers and mountains, and see the enchanting castles and otherworldly caves that define the region.

This 11-day French vacation takes you through the region of Bordeaux to sample delicious wines and see historical treasures.

Your trip to France begins in the port city of Bordeaux, located on the Garonne River and the hub of this region of southwestern France. Known for its hearty red wines and gorgeous Gothic architecture, from the Saint-Andre Cathedral to the Place de la Bourse and the Three Graces Fountain, Bordeaux is one of France’s most popular vacation cities. After getting acquainted with the city, you’ll begin your journey through the southwest of France. First stop is the Great Dune of Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe. After surveying the sand dunes that seem more home in the Sahara than the southwest of France, continue to Arcachon Bay to enjoy some fresh oysters and a glass of local wine. Continue to the seaside town of Biarritz to enjoy the beachside atmosphere of the Basque Coast.

From Biarritz, you’ll head to Bayonne to explore the town’s history and culture and visit the Ham Museum, where you’ll sample delectable slices of French ham. Continue towards the Spanish border and head into the Midi-Pyrenees region. Stop by the sacred town of Lourdes to see its famous cathedral and learn about its long history of miracles and religious visions. Follow the trail of the knights into Cathar Country and sample some of the region’s famous sparkling wine known as Blanquette. Continue to Carcassonne, the gorgeous town known for its iconic 12th century medieval castle. Spend a full day exploring the castle’s medieval battlements and admiring its picture-perfect image of medieval life.

From Carcassonne, head to the historical town of Albi to explore its museum and see the stunning Sainte-Cecile Cathedral. Continue into the Dordogne to Sarlat, where you can see the town’s collection of stunning churches, including Sainte-Marie Church and Sarlat Cathedral. At Lascaux Cave, you’ll see some of the world’s oldest prehistoric cave paintings. Then follow the Royal Road through the craggy rocks and rivers of the countryside to reach a truffle farm, where you’ll learn about this delicacy. Your final stops on your French vacation are the riverside town of Beynac-et-Cazenac, with its stunning medieval chateaux, and Saint-Emilion, where you’ll taste the region’s distinctive heavy red wines and cap off your journey with a celebratory final dinner. You’ll then return to Bordeaux to close out your vacation.
